Thomas C. Cowan

Thomas C. Cowan is a graduate of The University of the South (B.A., 1974) and Tulane University (J.D., 1977). He is a member of the Bars of Louisiana (1977) and Texas (1994) and is a member of the New Orleans Bar Association, the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, Defense Research Institute, and The Maritime Law Association.

Tom practices in the areas of professional liability and casualty law. He began his litigation career in the New Orleans District Attorney’s office, where he prosecuted more than forty jury trials. Since 1980, Tom has practiced in the area of general tort defense including trials in state and federal courts in the fields of maritime, products liability, medical malpractice and transportation law. Tom’s practice in the field of products liability ranges from medical devices to hay-balers. In the field of health care, he has defended long-term care facilities, emergency medicine physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, physical therapists, internists and other specialists. He has also defended numerous premises liability cases, construction companies and trucking companies. He has lectured on various health care topics and products liability matters.

Tom has drafted several bills in support of tort reform in the healthcare/long-term care industry and provided related testimony before numerous legislative committees. He has also drafted by-laws for healthcare institutions and served as both counsel and mediator for hospitals regarding interdisciplinary disputes.
